Welsh stick chairs have a long history, traditionally being made from hedgerow timber by local workers such as tool makers, coopers and wheelwrights. Over time these traditional chairs became more sophisticated, the art of chair making became a craft in itself and the timbers were chosen for their various properties rather than ready availability.
My individual stick chairs are handmade using traditional tools and techniques, crafted from locally sourced hardwoods; Elm for the seats, crest and arms, Oak for the legs and Ash for the sticks, the exposed joints being wedged with a contrasting wood, often Bog Oak. They are crafted and polished to a high standard to ensure that they will give years of pleasure and pass down the generations to be the antiques of tomorrow.
My interest in early Celtic country chairs developed over the years during my time spent living and working in Ireland, England and Wales; I have now settled back in England to continue my craft from my workshop in Shropshire. My hope is that my handcrafted chairs will bring as much pleasure to you, the new owner, as I had in the making of them.
